Certification Requirements

Teacher Licensure Needed:  Yes

Master’s Degree Needed: No

Praxis II Library Media Content Test Needed: Yes, passing score is 156 or above.

Other Testing Needed: Yes, Praxis I: ETS-Pre Professional Skills Testing (PPST), submitting reading, writing, and mathematics scores that meet or exceed the state cut score. The state cut score can be found at: http://www.nd.gov/espb/licensure/testing.html

Description: A Library Media Specialist needs a bachelor’s degree and 26 hours of library media education. A Librarian Designate needs a bachelor’s degree and 16 hours of library media education. A Library Media Director must have a master’s degree.

Evaluation Process for Licensure

Options for eligible individuals:

Plan of Study Option

  • Licensed or approved to teach by North Dakota
  • Employed as a librarian in a school that could not find a credentialed librarian
  • Completed a minimum of six semester hours of undergraduate or graduate work in library media
  • Submit a written plan of study for approval to become a credentialed librarian and continue to complete six hours of undergraduate or graduate credit in library science and submit transcripts annually.

Librarian Credential (LM03)

  • Coincides with the period the individual is licensed to teach or approved to teach
  • Individual who completed a minimum of fifteen semester hours of undergraduate or graduate credits in library media

Library Media Specialist Credential (LM02)

  • Coincides with the period for which the individual is licensed to teach or approved to teach
  • Individual completes a minimum of twenty-four semester hours of undergraduate or graduate credits in library media

Library Media Director Credential (LM01)

  • Coincides with the period for which the individual is licensed to teach or approved to teach
  • Holds a master’s degree in library science, media education, another field of education, or educational administration
  • Individual has completed a minimum of twenty-four semester hours of undergraduate or graduate credits in library media and six graduate hours in educational administration

Reciprocity: North Dakota follows the Interstate Agreement with the 50 states and the District of Columbia in the National Association of State Directors of Teacher Education & Certification (NASDEC).
