Certification Requirements

Teacher Licensure Needed:  Yes

Master’s Degree Needed: Yes

Praxis II Library Media Content Test Needed: Passing score is 148 or above. For a position as a media supervisor, the candidate must also pass the Educational Leadership and Administration exam with a score of 145 or above on the Library Media Content Test.

Other Testing Needed: No

Description: North Carolina describes this position as a librarian, library teacher, or media coordinator.  In addition, the media supervisor/director is a system level media professional.

Evaluation Process for Licensure 

Criteria for eligible individuals:

Media Coordinator

  • Completion of an approved program for a media coordinator at the Master’s degree level or above

OR

  • Completion of an approved program after July 1, 1984, allows a provisional license upon employment (18 hours in library media) with requirements to update to Master’s degree level

Media Supervisor

Completion of three graduate semesters in each of the following above the library media certification:

  • Administration
  • Curriculum Development
  • Supervision

Reciprocity: North Carolina follows the Interstate Agreement with the 41 states and the District of Columbia in the National Association of State Directors of Teacher Education & Certification (NASDEC).
