Certification Requirements

Teacher Licensure Needed:  Yes Primary through Grade 12

Master’s Degree Needed:  Yes

Praxis II School Media Librarian Test Needed: If a candidate has been teaching for two or more years, the Praxis II test is not needed. If a candidate has been teaching for less than two years, a passing score of 156 or above is needed.

Other Testing Needed: Yes, a passing scores of 160 or above on one of the Praxis II – Principles of Learning and Teaching (K-6, 5-9, or 7-12)

Description: The Library Media Specialist certification is an all-grades (P-12) certificate.

Evaluation Process for Licensure

The criteria for eligible individuals are:

  • A teacher preparation program
  • Internship

For applicants with a certificate and 2 years of experience as a Library Media Specialist, the Praxis and the Internship are waived.

Reciprocity: Yes, through the National Association of State Directors of Teacher Education and Certification (NASDTEC) Interstate Agreement. This can be found at:  http://www.nasdtec.net/?InterstateAgreements

Kentucky will accept any state certification, as long as the candidate meets Kentucky requirements.
