Certification Requirements

Teacher Licensure Needed:  Yes

Master’s Degree Needed: Yes, if certification is for K-12

Praxis II Library Media Content Test Needed: Yes – Library Media Specialist: score 156

Other Testing Needed: No

Description: Iowa has three levels of certification for library media: Elementary schools teacher librarian; Secondary school teacher librarian; and school teacher librarian K-12  (http://www.boee.iowa.gov/endorsements/endorsements_teacher_gened.html). The Master’s is needed to be certified K-12.

Evaluation Process for Licensure

Testing for individuals who hold a valid and comparable certificate may be waived. The criteria for eligible individuals are:

Program requirements for Elementary school media specialist (K-6):

  • Degree: Baccalaureate.
  • Completion of an approved human relations program.
  • Completion of the professional education core.
  • Content. Completion of twenty-four semester hours in school media course work.

Program requirements for Secondary school media specialist (7-12):

  • Degree: Baccalaureate.
  • Completion of an approved human relations program.
  • Completion of the professional education core.
  • Content. Completion of twenty-four semester hours in school media course work.

Program requirements for School Teacher Librarian (K-12):

  • Degree: Master’s.
  • Content. Completion of a sequence of courses and experiences which may have been part of, or in addition to, the degree requirements. This sequence is to be at least thirty semester hours in school media course work.

Reciprocity: Yes, through the National Association of State Directors of Teacher Education and Certification (NASDTEC) Interstate Agreement.  This can be found at:  http://www.nasdtec.org
